Neptunes Bash at the Beach Tournament Review 1/22/12
There were some big guns blazing at the Neptunes Tournament Saturday. No 8th grade teams, but some superb 6th and 7th grade matchups took place.
In the 6th grade pool, in perhaps the best 6th grade game of the day, BWSL faced off against a tough Team Evolve. The game was back and forth for the entire 32 minutes. Neither team had a large lead in the game. Evolve held a 6 point lead for much of the first half, but with the offiicials calling most every touch foul, they began to get into foul trouble. They closed the half with a 4 point lead. Evolve's tandem of Hemingway and Miller kept it close, but Edmonds and Ross countered and the game was a 1 point margin most of the second half. The lead changed hands 5 times in the last 1:30 of the game and it was a baseline jumper by Jennifer Davis with seconds remaining on the clock that sealed the victory for BWSL. Final Score 47-46.
In the 7th grade pool, the game of the day was BWSL Richmond versus BWSL Norfolk Xpress. This matchup is always a tough contest and BWSL Richmond came into it prepared. In their last match up in December, Xpress easily defeated Richmond by 15 in a one-sided game. This day BWSL Richmond was ready to battle. The game was back and forth at the beginning with both teams playing tough defense. Neither team had more than a two point lead at any time in the first half. The difference in this game would be the three point line. Jennifer Davis and Charme Lilly each had 1 three pointer in the first half that would help them have a 1 point lead after the first 16 minutes of play. Dyamond Hamilton and Janajah Sommerville would contribute 21 of the teams 27 points in the first half for Xpress. In the second half, BWSL would pull away. It was Jennifer Davis contributing four straight three pointers in a row to extend the lead to 15 and the team would never look back. Davis finished with 19 points, Rachael Stovall contributed 12 points and 17 rebounds, and Jesse Nash scored 7 points in the second half in clutch moments. Dyamond Hamilton would finish the contest with 20 points and Sommerville contributed 17 points.
